Kate Beckinsale by SirCula Kate Beckinsale by SirCula
My first attempt at painting a portrait. Photo reference used. This is 100% photoshop and on 1 layer from start to finish as I tried to use the canvas as if it was real with real paint, also I chose every colour individually and did not use the eyedropper on the reference photo at all.

This is good. Especially if it's your first attempt at digital painting. You can really tell it's her.

One thing I would have liked to see, is a bit more blending of the colors, and some more work on the hair. But otherwise it's great.

Thanks I value your opinion, it was tough as it was my first try at painting a portrait. I agree about the colour blending and the hair. do you prefer painter to photoshop? it certainly seems more natural for some things but for large stuff it just seems to take ages in painter.

I havent worked as much as I would like in painter yet, so I would have to say I prefer photoshop=) But if you look at some painter made artwork, you can see that some things you just can't do in photoshop, since it's lacking many of the brush possibilities. Even if you can make alot of custom brushes in photoshop you still can't get that painter feeling.

I agree about it being hard to blend big stuff in painter(from the little time I've tried it out), but I guess there are ways to do that smoothly in painter as well.

It would be nice to see some more paintings.

Keep it up!

my painting skills...especially with painter...are rather embarassing haha, so I dont show my paintings, I just found some brushes last night that make using painter a lot simpler for me. On this page [link] they are more predictable compared to the brushes I was working with, and the pencil brush is great!

apparently the method some artists use in painter is to paint a small piece with big brushes(like 400x600) and then after theyve nailed the idea they resize the canvas to like 4000x6000 for all the good details

To me it looks like you used one layer, chose your own colors and never touched the ref image with the eyedropper.

Even if you didn't tell us, that would be my assumption.

Wow I almost thought this was a real picture, and from the coments here I see I'm not alone. The hair's a bit ... off, but you've gotten enough "flak" about that so I digress.

I like Kate Beckinsale, and this drawing's great. I hope to see more of this in the future!

great work. there may be some problems on hair, but you can fix it with some new brushes which you create.
create some types of different brushes in photoshop to paint different textures or surfaces.
you can save lots of time with well designed brushes...

Amazingly good work. The hair looks maybe messy were you tried do paint single hairs. I know how difficult is to do this, so I'm trying to give my paintings texture without painting hair by hair. But I am not a professional. Anyway I use Painter.

Yeah if I had painter I think I could do much better hair, just the fact that the brush gradually smoothes off in painter would have added much realism. I had a demo of it and I loved it!

Wow, this really great! My fave part is the hair. I like how you have it the natural highlights with depth and demension. Hair is always so hard for me. :( Also, kudos on not using the eyedropper and colorpicking. Using it sometimes makes skintones look dull. I like how you used some warm oranges in the shaddows of the face - it gives it a lot of life!

Thankyou very much! I was actually inspired by your work and also by legoparanoia's works and just wanted to make an attempt at achieving the same degree of life and realism in my work that you two manage to achieve so often. Like I said it was just gonna be a speed paint...5 or 6 hours later Im like "what am I still doing this for!". Guess I miss doing some real art(used to do alot of drawing and acrylics at school), been doing alot of interactive media stuff for my degree :P

You certainly managed to make it realistic! My eye was fooled into thinking it was a photo when i first saw it.

It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to hear that my work inspired someone else to keep on painting. ^__^ Thank you so much! I hope to see more work like this from you in the near future. I'm definately giving you a watch :)
